Riyadh, Nov 5 (KUNA) -- Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Jassem Al-Bedaiwi said on Thursday that the proposed study on GCC strategic storage projects aims to enhance the Council’s member states’ capacity to secure their needs under various circumstances and challenges.

The GCC Secretariat General said in a statement that this came during a joint meeting of the ministers of trade, industry, agricultural cooperation, food security, and health of the GCC member states, held via video conferencing technology and chaired by Bahrain’s Minister of Municipalities and Agriculture Affairs Wael Al-Mubarak, with the attendance of the ministers of trade, industry, agricultural cooperation, food security, and health from the member states.

Al-Bedaiwi clarified that the rapid geopolitical developments witnessed in the region and the world, along with the accompanying disruptions in supply chains and trade routes, underscore the importance of strengthening common GCC systems to ensure the supply of food, medicine, and basic necessities, and to enhance coordination among the relevant sectors.

He added that the meeting comes within the framework of following up on the implementation of decisions made by the GCC leaders during their 19th consultative meeting held in Jeddah last April, which focused on enhancing joint GCC efforts in strategic sectors, including the study of establishing GCC strategic storage zones for food, medicine, and other necessities.

He affirmed that the Secretariat General had attached great importance to expediting the preparation of the study through close coordination with member states, leveraging national expertise, and continuously reviewing outputs to arrive at practical recommendations that respond to the needs and strategic priorities of the GCC member states.

He expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the member states, ministries, and relevant authorities for their support and cooperation, and for the technical inputs they provided, which contributed to enriching the study and developing its outputs, commending the efforts of the technical team at the Secretariat General overseeing its follow-up.

He concluded by emphasizing the importance of the meeting’s discussions in crystallizing appropriate recommendations to support moving forward with this vital project, thereby enhancing the trajectory of joint GCC work in securing the strategic needs of the member states. (End) A.S. / S.A.M.
