Brussels, Nov 4 (KUNA) -- Brandone Benivi, head of the European Parliament’s delegation for relations with the United States, stated that the results of the U.S. midterm elections constitute a clear political message against the agenda of U.S. President Donald Trump, expressing Europe’s readiness to restart dialogue and cooperation with the new U.S. Congress.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Benivi said that the transfer of control of Congress from Republicans to Democrats reflects the desire of American voters to change course, citing issues such as the rising cost of living, the war in Iran, policies related to civil rights and citizenship, and the management of U.S. immigration and customs operations.
Benivi expressed hope that the new legislative session in the United States would mark a “renewed beginning for dialogue and cooperation” between the European and American legislative bodies, emphasizing that transatlantic relations remain essential for Europe’s security, the competitiveness of its economy, and the well-being of its citizens and businesses.
He also called for relaunching a joint agenda that includes gradually reducing reciprocal tariffs, strengthening support for Ukraine in its war against Russia, working toward a resolution of the Middle East crisis, and developing “strategic” cooperation in the fields of critical minerals and semiconductors.
At the same time, Benivi stressed the importance of strengthening supply chains and addressing “imbalances” in global trade and “unfair” competition, underscoring the need to “rebuild trust” and consolidate a transatlantic partnership based on “reciprocity and shared strategic interests.”
Preliminary results of the 2026 U.S. midterm elections showed the Democratic Party winning a majority of seats in both chambers of Congress. According to non-final results, Democrats secured a majority in the 100-seat Senate with 54 seats compared to 44 for Republicans, flipping seven states in their favor and gaining 25 new seats previously held by their opponents. In the House of Representatives elections, Democrats have so far won 228 of the 435 seats, compared to 139 for Republicans, as vote counting continues. (End) A.R.N. / M.A.A.
