Preliminary Results: Democrats Seize Majority in US House of Representatives

Washington, Nov 4 (KUNA) -- Preliminary results of the U.S. midterm congressional elections, following the counting of votes in states where polling stations closed on Wednesday, indicate that Democratic candidates have secured the majority of seats in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. According to live broadcasts by U.S. media, Democrats have won 43 Senate seats compared to 31 for Republicans in states where most votes have been tallied, with 26 seats still awaiting final counts. Democrats have also won 36 House seats, while Republicans have won 16, and results for 383 seats remain undecided. Regarding gubernatorial races, preliminary results show 11 Democratic victories against 8 Republican ones, with results for 31 governors yet to be officially announced. In key Senate states, early results from states where voting has concluded show former Democratic Senator Roy Cooper defeating his Republican opponent, Michael Watson, in North Carolina, a seat that had long been held by Republicans. John Ossoff is also expected to win his Senate race in Georgia, retaining a crucial seat that Republicans had previously considered a golden opportunity. In states pivotal to determining the new majority in the House of Representatives, early results from states where voting has ended show incumbent Democratic Representative John Shapiro defeating Republican challenger Stacey Garretty, the state treasurer, in Pennsylvania. In Florida, which is critical for determining the House majority, Democratic Representative Jared Moskowitz is expected to win the state’s 25th congressional district following redistricting. Preliminary results continue to emerge as polling stations close according to the three time zones used in the United States. (End) R.S.R. / H.S.S.
