Cairo – Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy on Tuesday praised Slovenia’s positions supporting the Palestinian cause and the rights of the Palestinian people, particularly regarding the establishment of their independent state, and called for continued international efforts to halt settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territories. This came during a meeting between Fahmy and Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar, who is currently visiting Cairo to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between the Arab League and Slovenia, according to a statement issued by the League.
During the meeting, Fahmy expressed his appreciation for Slovenia’s stance supporting the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and its backing for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state in accordance with the two-state solution, as well as its rejection of the displacement of Palestinians from their land. Fahmy commended the Slovenian President’s positions calling for the protection of civilians, respect for international law without double standards, and rejection of settlement expansion that undermines prospects for peace.
In this context, he stressed the necessity of consolidating the ceasefire and ensuring adequate, sustainable, and unhindered flow of humanitarian aid, while rejecting any attempts to displace the Palestinian people from their land. He emphasized the importance of intensifying international efforts to end the illegal Israeli occupation and realize an independent, sovereign Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on relevant international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
He also warned against the repercussions of continued settlement expansion, annexation plans, and unilateral Israeli measures that undermine peace prospects and threaten the two-state solution. According to the statement, the two sides discussed regional developments, with Fahmy stressing the importance of prioritizing political and diplomatic solutions, respecting the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of states, and avoiding further escalation that threatens the security and stability of the region.
The meeting also addressed ways to continue dialogue and consultation between the Arab League and Slovenia on issues of mutual interest, and to enhance Arab-European cooperation in support of efforts to establish peace and stability in the region. (End) M.M. / N.S.A.
