Washington, Nov 2 (KUNA) — U.S. President Donald Trump stressed on Monday the importance of the midterm elections scheduled for Tuesday, calling them the “most important in our lives” and urging his base to turn out and vote for Republican candidates in all the seats they are contesting. In the closing speech of his campaign for the midterms, Trump said, “This is the last day before the midterm elections. In my view, they are the most important midterm elections we have seen in our lives.” Speaking at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., and broadcast nationwide, he warned that “usually, no matter how good or bad the current president is—whether Republican or Democratic—for some reason, he does not win the midterm elections. But we have fought this battle with great strength.” He urged his supporters to participate in voting, adding, “If the people who voted for me in the previous election show up—even if only a good portion of them do—we will achieve a landslide victory.” The current elections feature competition for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives, as well as 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate. Voters in 36 states will also elect their state governors. Through tomorrow’s elections, approximately 210 million registered voters will determine the extent of Trump’s power for the remainder of his presidential term. Trump has recently noted several times that repeated electoral experience shows that midterm elections often result in the opposition party gaining control, prompting his base to prevent that outcome this time. In an interview with The New York Post yesterday, Trump said his strategy for dealing with the possibility of Democrats taking control of Congress would be to become the “Mr. Veto,” meaning he would use his veto power against any legislation passed by the Democratic majority before negotiating compromises.
