Brussels, October 30 (KUNA) -- The European Union announced today, Friday, the establishment of a strategic partnership with Canada under the name “Alliance for the Future,” aimed at enhancing economic, security, and technological cooperation between the two sides amid geopolitical shifts, trade tensions, and growing international competition.
The announcement came during a summit held between the two parties in Montreal, Canada, attended by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Antonio Costa, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The summit saw agreement on a number of initiatives and understandings.
Von der Leyen, speaking at a joint press conference with Carney, said the new partnership aims to build a shared space for prosperity and economic security and to strengthen both sides’ capacity to confront global challenges. She emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation in key sectors, including strategic minerals, energy, advanced technologies, and artificial intelligence.
For his part, Carney noted that the new strategic partnership would focus on bolstering resilience between the two sides in areas such as artificial intelligence, energy, critical minerals, quantum technology, and other strategic sectors. He added that the two sides would define in the coming months the scope and format of a new framework for Canada-EU relations, stressing that Canada seeks to achieve “the deepest possible partnership without full membership” in the European Union.
Carney clarified that he hopes Canada will become the first country to obtain “associate member” status in the EU, noting his acceptance of an invitation from European Council President Antonio Costa to attend a Council meeting scheduled for June 2027, aimed at finalizing negotiations on this relationship.
The joint statement referred only to establishing “a closer tie than full membership,” with an agreement to determine the nature and scope of this relationship by the next summit between the two sides in 2027, meaning that associate membership remains a proposal under discussion and not an agreed legal status.
This partnership comes as the EU and Canada seek to enhance their economic and strategic autonomy and diversify their trade and investment ties amid uncertainty characterizing international relations and challenges linked to economic and technological competition between the United States and China.
