Beirut -- Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health warned restaurant owners, butchers, and meat suppliers on Friday against any fraud or manipulation involving the type, source, or expiration date of meat, following the recording of cases suspected of trichinosis. In a statement, the ministry said that in light of these suspected cases, it is following up on the matter in coordination with relevant authorities through epidemiological investigations and necessary laboratory tests “to identify the sources of infection and take appropriate measures to protect public health.” It explained that trichinosis is “a parasitic disease transmitted to humans through the consumption of raw or undercooked meat, especially pork from infected animals and its derivatives. The disease is not transmitted directly from person to person, and the incubation period ranges from two to eight weeks after consuming the contaminated meal.” It added that symptoms usually begin with gastrointestinal disturbances, including nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain, which may be followed by fever, muscle pain, severe fatigue, and swelling around the eyes. In severe cases, complications may affect the heart, nervous system, and respiratory system. The ministry called on citizens to adhere to preventive guidelines, such as avoiding the consumption of raw or undercooked meat, purchasing meat from reliable and supervised sources, and not considering freezing, salting, or smoking as guaranteed methods to eliminate the parasite. It also urged them to follow hygiene and food safety practices when preparing meat and to consult a doctor if suspected symptoms appear after eating raw or undercooked meat, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and appropriate treatment to limit complications.
