Aden, October 30 (KUNA) -- The Yemeni Armed Forces announced that they are treating seriously reports of the use by the (Houthi) militia of shells suspected of containing toxic substances on the fronts of Taiz Governorate, which resulted in civilians and members of the Popular Resistance suffering from suffocation and fainting.

In a statement received by the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on Friday, the official spokesperson for the Yemeni Armed Forces, Brigadier General Majid Al-Nazili, said that these reports necessitate an urgent investigation to determine the nature of the substances used, document their effects, uncover their sources, and identify the parties involved in supplying them.

Al-Nazili added that these reports come amid a continuous escalation in Taiz Governorate, which includes sniping operations, indiscriminate shelling of residential neighborhoods, sieges, road blockades, and the prevention of access to water, food, medicine, and humanitarian supplies.

He warned the Houthi militia against targeting civilians or using prohibited weapons, emphasizing that protecting citizens and breaking the siege on Taiz is a fixed responsibility of the state and its armed forces.

He called on the United Nations and relevant international bodies to support the investigation into these incidents, pressure for an end to the violations, open the roads, ensure the unhindered delivery of humanitarian supplies, and hold those responsible for attacks on civilians accountable.

He stressed that the Armed Forces will continue to take the necessary measures to protect civilians in accordance with their constitutional obligations and international humanitarian law.

The local authority in Taiz Governorate had confirmed on Wednesday that it had received field reports of the Houthi militia using shells suspected of containing toxic substances on the fronts of Al-Aqroud and Kahlan in Jabal Sabr, south of Taiz city, an area witnessing the fiercest ongoing battles for weeks.

It pointed out that similar past incidents had resulted in civilians and Popular Resistance members suffering from suffocation and fainting, and called for an urgent technical investigation to determine the nature of the substances and their health effects. (End) S.N.S. / M.A.H.A.
