Cairo – The Arab League issued a call on Wednesday for support of the Sudanese people to halt the war, preserve the unity of their country, and quickly open the path to an inclusive national dialogue whose course is determined by Sudanese themselves and in which they hold the initiative. The statement was released by the Arab League following General Secretary Nabil Fahmy’s visit to Khartoum on Monday to engage in direct communication with Sudanese leadership and political forces and to assess the situation in Sudan.

The statement noted that the 20-hour visit aimed to support national efforts to end the war and create conditions for launching a comprehensive dialogue that addresses the root causes of the crisis and paves the way for restoring stability. It added that the meetings and field visits underscored the urgent need to back the Sudanese people in stopping the bloodshed, safeguarding their state, and restoring normal life in their cities and institutions.

The Arab League renewed its appeal to all stakeholders in Sudan to lay down their arms, making support for dialogue and the rapprochement of viewpoints the sole means of helping Sudanese people end the war and reclaim their country. It pointed out that the visit included meetings with the Chairman of the Sovereign Council, Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the Prime Minister, Kamal Abdelrahman, and members of the committee preparing for dialogue, as well as extensive talks with representatives of political and civil forces and community leaders.

The statement quoted Fahmy as reaffirming during the visit the firm Arab position supporting Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the preservation of its national institutions, and reiterating the Arab League’s readiness to support national efforts to launch an inclusive Sudanese dialogue led by Sudanese who hold the decision-making authority.

The League also reaffirmed its readiness to provide expertise and political and technical support, mobilize humanitarian and development assistance in cooperation with Arab countries and relevant parties, and support recovery and reconstruction projects in coordination with state institutions, while respecting Sudanese will and enabling Sudanese people to rebuild their country with their own hands.
