Doha -- Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Director of Media and Communications, Ibrahim Al-Hashemi, said on Tuesday that the region needs a new regional security architecture that respects the sovereignty of states, emphasizing the principle of mutual non-aggression. During the weekly press briefing at the Qatari Foreign Ministry, Al-Hashemi clarified that Qatar’s development of its defensive capabilities is not linked to any specific crisis, but rather forms part of a continuous effort to enhance deterrence capacities and protect national sovereignty. He noted that these efforts “have proven their significant effectiveness and high efficiency during the recent escalation in the region,” as the state’s defensive systems successfully handled all attacks, ensuring the continuity of normal life and economic activities without disruption.

He pointed out that Qatar’s and Pakistan’s efforts complement those of the brothers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the (Mecca Alliance) to de-escalate tensions and end the state of tension in the region. Al-Hashemi added that Qatar and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have consistently affirmed their readiness to build this security architecture, noting that “the ball is now in the Iranian court to commit to these principles and demonstrate good faith.”

He stressed that “despite positive statements issued from Tehran, what is required is to translate them into practice by halting threats directed at the countries of the region and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, thereby contributing to the establishment of a safe and prosperous region.”

Regarding the visit of a Qatari delegation to Tehran, Al-Hashemi said it falls within the context of continuing consultations with partners and pursuing mediation efforts, emphasizing that these efforts “are proceeding in a positive framework aimed primarily at de-escalation and ending the state of tension.” He noted that despite signals from both the American and Iranian sides regarding the possibility of escalation, there is a parallel affirmation of the importance of reaching diplomatic solutions through dialogue, stressing that this path is what Qatar and Pakistan, along with regional and international partners, are focusing on to achieve a sustainable agreement that fully and comprehensively ends the crisis.

With regard to the successive statements between Washington and Tehran, Al-Hashemi explained that “the role of the diplomatic mediator always lies in adhering to positive points and building upon them to bridge gaps and reach consensus outcomes that sustainably end the crisis and ensure free and smooth international navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.” He affirmed that mediators remain committed to the “window of hope,” firmly believing that “the effective and final solution can only be achieved through negotiations, which requires concerted efforts and continuous push toward de-escalation, reducing tensions, and resolving all outstanding files through peaceful diplomatic means.”

He noted that the movement of exchanging diplomatic messages, ideas, and viewpoints between the United States and Iran continues uninterrupted through the Qatari mediation channel, in constant coordination with partners, highlighting that these diligent efforts “have not stopped for a single moment” and are strongly pushing to contain the conflict and create appropriate conditions for reaching urgent solutions that end the vortex of conflict and provide security and stability guarantees for all countries in the region.
