Brussels, October 26 (KUNA) -- The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, warned on Monday of the risk of renewed escalation between the United States and Iran, stressing that any new escalation would only result in losses for all parties. Speaking at a press conference following a meeting of the defense ministers of the European Five (E5) countries in Paris, Kallas said the European Union had discussed developments in the Middle East amid growing security risks. She condemned the Houthi group’s indiscriminate attacks on Yemen and Saudi Arabia, noting that the European maritime operation, Aspides, contributes to ensuring the continued flow of goods and oil through the Red Sea. She expressed appreciation for the contributions of France, Italy, and Greece to the operation, emphasizing that more than 60 countries had joined the EU’s commitment to oppose the imposition of fees or tolls on international shipping routes, and stressed the necessity of guaranteeing freedom of navigation without obstacles. Regarding Lebanon, Kallas said the European Union is working to establish a new mission to provide advice and training to the Lebanese Armed Forces and Internal Security Forces, with the aim of strengthening state control over its territory, border security, and internal security. She affirmed that the EU is investing in Lebanon’s future by supporting its security capabilities and strengthening its institutions. (End) A.R.N. / R.J.
