Cairo, October 25 (KUNA) – The fourth meeting of the joint committee of experts and representatives from the ministries of justice and interior affairs and relevant authorities in Arab countries kicked off today, Sunday, to continue discussions on the draft Arab Convention for the Protection of Personal Data, with a view to reaching a consensus on the matter.

In an opening address, Dr. Maha Bakheet, Director of the Legal Affairs Department at the Arab League and Minister Plenipotentiary, stated that the meeting is held in implementation of the decision of the Arab Ministers of Justice Council approving Algeria’s proposal to prepare the draft Arab Convention for the Protection of Personal Data.

She added that the meeting is part of Arab efforts to enhance cooperation among member states in the field of personal data protection, given the growing importance of safeguarding individual privacy and ensuring the protection of their data in various transactions.

Bakheet explained that the joint committee had held three previous meetings to study the draft convention and examine its provisions, noting that the fourth meeting aims to continue completing the discussion of the draft’s articles and reviewing proposed formulations, thereby contributing to the adoption of a comprehensive text that takes into account the requirements of Arab states in this field.

She emphasized, in this regard, the importance of continuing coordination and consultation among experts and representatives of relevant authorities in Arab countries to reach a common formulation that contributes to developing Arab legal frameworks related to personal data protection and enhancing cooperation in addressing challenges associated with its circulation and use.

The outcomes of the meeting are scheduled to be presented to the next session of the Arab Ministers of Justice Council, hosted by Algeria next month, for consideration of the committee’s outputs and subsequent steps regarding the draft.

Kuwait is participating in the meeting with a delegation from the Ministry of Interior, headed by Colonel (Legal Affairs) Faraj Al-Ajmi, and including Abdulwahab Al-Dar’a and Ibrahem Al-Mansouri from the Ministry of Justice. (End) M.M. / N.B.S.
