Kuwait City, Oct 24 (KUNA) -- The National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters hosted an evening concert titled “ORBIS LUNA” on Saturday, conducted by Kuwaiti composer and maestro Nawaf Al-Ghurair, with participation from the Vanguard Symphony Orchestra, at the Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre’s Sheikh Jaber Al-Ali Theatre. The concert is part of the Council’s efforts to enrich Kuwait’s cultural and artistic landscape, providing a platform for creative musical experiments that blend authenticity with innovation and strengthen the presence of orchestral music among the public.

The concert presented a musical experience titled “In the Orbit of the Moon,” which marks the first major symphonic project by Kuwaiti composer Nawaf Al-Ghurair. It reflects an artistic journey developed over several years, moving between moments of quiet contemplation and the expressive power of a full orchestra. The program featured the “Violin Concerto No. 1,” with soloist Salma Sarour, alongside “Symphony No. 1: Hope,” in a musical composition inspired by the moon’s movement and cycles, evoking themes linked to the alternation between darkness and light, motion and stillness, presence and absence.

The concert served as an extension of a musical experience that began with a live recording of the work in Cairo, Egypt, last January, in collaboration with the Vanguard Symphony Orchestra, before the project moved to Kuwait to be presented live to the public, bringing together the composer, the orchestra, and the audience.

Headquartered in Cairo, the Vanguard Symphony Orchestra comprises a select group of professional musicians from various orchestral ensembles across Egypt. It is distinguished by its diverse musical lineup and its repertoire, which spans classical compositions to contemporary and modern works.

Maestro Nawaf Al-Ghurair is among the Kuwaiti musicians who combine composition with orchestral conducting. He began playing the piano at the age of eight and later expanded his exploration to include a variety of instruments, such as the Australian didgeridoo, hand drums, and the Chinese gong. Al-Ghurair studied music at the Kuwait Institute of Musical Arts and earned a master’s degree in music from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. He is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in music composition in Cairo, while also working academically as a teacher of composition, harmony, and orchestration.

His compositions range from works for full orchestra and solo pieces to film scores, drawing on his experiences with diverse musical cultures and traditions in an effort to create a distinctive musical language that blends human emotions with contemporary artistic expression. (End) S.H.D./M.M.J
