Istanbul, October 23 (KUNA) -- Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Friday that Israel’s daily violations of the ceasefire undermine confidence in the international system, while emphasizing the urgent need to prioritize the delivery of humanitarian aid and the protection of children.

Speaking at the opening of the Ninth Istanbul Mediation Conference, which began earlier today, Fidan said, “The world is facing a growing sense of distrust, and the peoples of many regions are now confronting armed conflicts, despite peace having been widely accepted for many years.”

He noted that the past few years have seen the continuation of multiple conflicts in various parts of the world, affecting vital trade and maritime routes. Fidan highlighted the rising human cost of these conflicts, pointing out that the United Nations estimates that about a quarter of the world’s population lives in conflict zones, and added that “the repercussions of the humanitarian tragedy are most clearly visible in Palestine.”

In the same context, the Turkish foreign minister stressed the necessity of resolving disputes through peaceful means and dialogue, noting that “the speed and scale of conflicts are testing the international system’s capacity to respond.” He underscored the importance of keeping communication channels open and continuing dialogue to resolve conflicts, even when progress is slow and fragile.

He cited Turkey’s efforts in this regard, including the talks between Russia and Ukraine aimed at ending the war that has been ongoing since 2022, the Black Sea Grain Initiative, and Ankara’s mediation between Somalia and Ethiopia in 2024.

Fidan affirmed that “stability is not a concept that can be imported, and lasting solutions cannot be imposed from outside,” stressing that parties involved in conflicts must play a role in resolving them.

Concluding his remarks, the Turkish foreign minister said his country is working to create conditions that help parties reach their own solutions, noting that the Turkish approach is based on “honest dialogue, sustained engagement, and regional ownership,” which contributes to enhancing regional and global security.
