Brussels, October 22 (KUNA) -- The European Parliament approved on Thursday a proposal to postpone the application of EU rules on methane emissions from oil and gas imports for three years. In a statement, the European Parliament said the proposal grants importers of crude oil, natural gas, and coal until May 2031 to demonstrate that supply contracts concluded or renewed since August 4, 2024, are limited to fuels subject to monitoring, reporting, and verification measures equivalent to those in force in the European Union. The statement added that the vote paves the way for members of the European Parliament and governments of EU member states to negotiate on the deadline in order to reach a final decision on the postponement. Methane is the second-largest contributor to climate change after carbon dioxide, making its emission reduction one of the EU’s key environmental priorities. (End) Arn / T.M.A
