Brussels, October 22 (KUNA) -- The European Parliament strongly condemned on Thursday the missile and drone attacks launched by Houthi militias against Saudi Arabia, calling for their inclusion, in both their political and military wings, on the European Union’s list of terrorist organizations. In a resolution adopted today, the parliament stated that Houthi attacks constitute violations of international law and international humanitarian law, noting their targeting of the United Arab Emirates in recent years, as well as attacks on energy infrastructure and commercial shipping in the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab strait.

The European Parliament expressed its solidarity with Saudi Arabia and its support for the legitimate Yemeni government, reaffirming its commitment to the security, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of both countries, and called on the Houthis to halt hostilities within Yemen and beyond.

The parliament condemned Iran’s role in destabilizing the region, accusing Tehran of supplying the Houthis with weapons, missile technology, drones, training, and funding, as well as coordinating with Hezbollah and other Iran-backed armed groups.

The statement urged the Council of the European Union to list the Houthis, their leaders, and their military and security apparatuses on the EU’s terrorist organizations list, dismantle their financing channels, and freeze the assets and funds of entities facilitating their activities.

The resolution warned of the repercussions of disrupted navigation in the Bab al-Mandab and Hormuz straits on regional security, energy prices, and the European economy, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the European Union’s naval mission (Aspides) by providing additional maritime and air capabilities, as well as expanding security and defense cooperation with Gulf partners.

The parliament also expressed concern over the worsening crisis in Yemen due to renewed fighting, civilian casualties, and the displacement of large numbers of people, calling on the European Union to increase humanitarian aid and ensure oversight of its expenditure. (End) Arn / T.M.A
