Brussels, Oct 21 (KUNA) -- The European Parliament proposed on Wednesday increasing the European Union’s 2027 budget appropriations to 194 billion euros ($217.68 billion) in commitment appropriations and 203.3 billion euros ($228.12 billion) in payment appropriations, with an additional 1.17 billion euros ($1.31 billion) earmarked to bolster the bloc’s priorities in the final year of its current multiannual financial framework. The Parliament stressed in a statement the need to finance the repayment of EU debts, including those of the Recovery Fund and the loan supporting Ukraine, without compromising funding for key European programs. The proposed increases include an additional 260 million euros ($291.75 million) for transport and energy networks, 63 million euros ($70.69 million) for the Horizon Europe research and innovation program, 96 million euros ($107.72 million) for the Erasmus+ education program, and 50 million euros ($56.11 million) for the European Health program. The Parliament also called for increased funding for support to farmers, the environment, and civil protection, alongside strengthening migration management and the protection of external borders, as well as boosting humanitarian aid and support directed at the EU’s southern and eastern neighboring countries. Negotiations between the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union are scheduled to begin on November 3, with the aim of reaching an agreement on the budget before the end of the year.
