Cairo, Oct 21 (KUNA) -- The Arab League called on Wednesday for the concerted efforts of media and educational institutions to verify information and promote the safe use of social media platforms, while adhering to professional and ethical standards in the era of digital media.

Ahmad Khatibi, Assistant Secretary-General for the Media and Communications Sector at the League, said in a statement marking World Press and Information Literacy Week that the development of Arab media is not limited to keeping pace with technology, but requires investment in human capital and capacity building, making media and information literacy a fundamental necessity for building societal awareness and enhancing trust and credibility while preserving the gains of digital development.

Khatibi noted that the global media landscape is undergoing rapid and profound transformations driven by technological advancements, the widespread dissemination of digital platforms and social media, and the increasing use of artificial intelligence applications in producing and disseminating media content. This has given rise to challenges related to the spread of fake news and misinformation.

He clarified that media and information literacy aims to entrench a culture of responsible technology use in the media field and to empower individuals, especially youth, to engage consciously with the evolving media environment.

He added that these changes require media institutions to develop their tools, strengthen professionalism and credibility, and deepen cooperation with educational institutions and international and regional organizations, ensuring they keep pace with digital developments and preserve the essential role of media in providing reliable information and contributing to the construction of an aware and responsible society.

In this context, he pointed out that the Council of Arab Ministers of Information adopted the Arab Strategy for Media and Information Literacy during its 55th ordinary session held in November 2025.

The world annually observes World Press and Information Literacy Week from October 24 to 31, with the aim of enhancing individuals’ capacities to access and use information responsibly, and to verify the credibility of news and its media sources. (End) MM / MA
