Beijing, Oct 20 (KUNA) -- China expressed its strong opposition on Tuesday to the ban imposed by the United States on services and products offered by DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence company, deeming it a “discriminatory and restrictive measure.” This came in a statement issued by China’s Ministry of Commerce in response to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s announcement on Monday barring federal government civilian and administrative agencies from purchasing products and services developed by DeepSeek, and requiring those agencies to remove the relevant products and services from their information systems.

The ministry said in its statement, as reported by China Central Television (CCTV), that Washington, by this decision, ignored the understandings reached between the presidents of the two countries, accusing it of “taking restrictive and discriminatory measures and misusing administrative tools to suppress Chinese AI companies.” It added that the U.S. move “has caused serious harm to the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies, undermined the market environment based on fair competition, and hindered normal commercial cooperation between the two countries in the field of artificial intelligence.”

The ministry urged the U.S. side to “respect the facts and market laws, immediately correct its wrongful practices, and stop suppressing Chinese companies without justification,” as well as “to cancel related measures to create favorable conditions for exchanges between the two sides.” It expressed hope that the United States would make use of the China-U.S. dialogue mechanism on artificial intelligence to “enhance mutual trust and manage differences,” pledging to closely monitor developments in the situation and take all necessary measures to protect Chinese interests “should they suffer actual harm.”

Regarding sanctions imposed by the United States on five Chinese companies on Monday on charges of “theft of trade secrets” under the U.S. Intellectual Property Rights Protection Act, China expressed its “categorical rejection” of these sanctions, considering them to have “damaged the reputation of Chinese companies and harmed their legitimate interests.” It affirmed that Chinese AI companies “have achieved rapid development thanks to their efforts in basic research and their continuous investments in technological innovation,” adding that this is “the fruit of openness and cooperation” and has no connection with “theft of trade secrets.” (End) S.L.Q / M.A.A
