Kuwait City, Oct 20 (KUNA) -- The Kuwait Water Supply Association launched today, Tuesday, the national campaign for water conservation under the slogan “A Drop for the Nation,” sponsored by the Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, Dr. Sabih Al-Makhzoum, and attended by representatives from the Ministry of Social Affairs and several official bodies and institutions supporting Kuwaiti charitable work.
Speaking to KUNA, Engineer Fatima Jawhar Hawa, spokesperson for the Ministry and representative of the Minister of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, said the ministry continues to develop the national awareness system for conserving water and energy by expanding cooperation with government entities, the private sector, educational institutions, and public benefit associations. This enhances consumption efficiency and supports the state’s efforts in managing its vital resources.
Hawa noted that the ministry’s participation in the “A Drop for the Nation” campaign builds on the positive results achieved by the national campaign for conserving energy and water, “Wafar,” which helped raise public awareness and supported the ministry’s efforts to address rising electricity and water demand during the summer season.
She added that the ministry is working to enhance the effectiveness of its awareness programs by delivering guidance messages to all segments of society and highlighting practices that contribute to reducing consumption and avoiding unnecessary use of water and energy, thereby positively impacting service efficiency and sustainability.
For her part, Assistant Undersecretary for the Social Care and Development Sector at the Ministry of Social Affairs, Iman Al-Anzi, told KUNA that the ministry places great emphasis on strengthening the role of civil society organizations in addressing social and developmental issues by supporting grassroots and charitable initiatives that serve the community and reinforce positive values.
Al-Anzi said the “A Drop for the Nation” campaign reflects the ability of charitable associations to expand their community work to include awareness of environmental issues and the preservation of natural resources, alongside their humanitarian and charitable roles, thereby enhancing their contribution to achieving sustainable development goals.
On his part, Dr. Najeel Al-Othman, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Association, told KUNA that water security represents one of the fundamental pillars of stability and development in the country, given the limited natural water resources, rising consumption rates, urban expansion, and population growth. This necessitates adopting a long-term strategic vision to confront future challenges.
Al-Othman explained that water production, desalination, and distribution to consumers require substantial financial investments and advanced infrastructure, with the state bearing a significant portion of the costs. He called for the establishment of a Supreme Water Council tasked with formulating policies and legislation, developing strategic plans, and creating alternatives that strengthen national water security.
He emphasized that conserving consumption does not mean reducing basic needs, but rather optimizing water use to preserve this resource for future generations.
For his part, Bader Al-Warik, Treasurer of the Association and Director of the “A Drop for the Nation” campaign, told KUNA that the campaign launches in its first edition in partnership with the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, offering a field-based awareness program aimed at directly reaching various segments of society and translating water conservation concepts into practical actions.
Al-Wareek added that the campaign’s field program includes schools, mosques, universities, markets, and other sites with community gatherings, aiming to familiarize individuals with the stages of water production, desalination, transmission, and distribution, as well as the energy and costs required to deliver water to consumers, thereby enhancing their awareness of the true value of every drop of water. He noted that the campaign seeks to bring about tangible changes in consumption behavior by addressing individuals in their everyday language and linking water consumption to the engineering and technical efforts and financial resources provided by the state for water production. He emphasized that reaching the widest possible audience with the awareness message is a crucial step toward curbing waste and strengthening individual responsibility toward national resources.
