Rashad al-Alimi requests UN support to designate Houthis as terrorists and ban their weapons

Aden, October 19 (KUNA) -- Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi called on UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday to support an international move through the UN Security Council to designate the Houthi militias as a terrorist organization, impose an arms embargo on them, cut off their funding sources, prevent their arming, hold their supporters accountable, and punish those responsible for their violations.

The Yemeni state news agency reported that this appeal came during a phone call between al-Alimi and Guterres to discuss the latest developments in Yemen amid Houthi escalation and its repercussions on international peace and security.

Al-Alimi briefed Guterres on Houthi missile and drone attacks on state institutions and civilian facilities, as well as the expansion of assaults on cities and villages. This coincided with the ongoing siege of the city of Taiz and the shelling of its residential neighborhoods, which has resulted in thousands of casualties, including civilians and children who were forced onto the front lines.

Al-Alimi stated that the Yemeni government has handled initiatives and agreements aimed at ending the war responsibly, whereas the Houthi militias responded to these efforts with escalation, exploiting ceasefires and political mediation to regroup and continue their violations.

He pointed to the continued detention of more than 70 UN staff members, alongside the abduction of thousands of citizens, emphasizing that the current phase requires the international community to move from condemnation to the full implementation of resolutions of international legitimacy, ending the Houthi threat, lifting the siege on cities, and opening safe routes and corridors for civilians and food and medical supplies.

He reaffirmed the Yemeni government’s commitment to a just and sustainable peace based on resolutions of international legitimacy, respect for Yemen’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and the restoration of its national institutions.

For his part, Guterres strongly condemned Houthi attacks within Yemen and across borders, and reiterated his rejection of the continued detention of UN staff and public workers, as well as all violations of international law. He stressed the international organization’s commitment to providing stronger support to the Yemeni government and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in confronting these threats. (End) S.N.S. / R.J.
