Kuwait City, October 19 (KUNA) – The Sadu Artisans Association presented the artistic installation “A Thread in Orbit” at the Martyr’s Park as part of its third phase, with the participation of 13 Kuwaiti members from the association’s “Thread” crochet group. The presentation was held to celebrate the opening of the new phase of the park and to highlight the aesthetics of Kuwaiti handicrafts through a contemporary artistic vision.
Sheikh Bibi Duaij Jaber Al-Sabah, Chairwoman of the Association’s Board of Directors, said in a press statement on Monday that the work exemplifies the capacity of Kuwaiti craft heritage to keep pace with contemporary artistic developments by combining manual skill, creative vision, and a spirit of teamwork.
Sheikh Bibi expressed her pride in the participation of 13 Kuwaiti artisans in realizing this work, which reflects their ability to develop their artistic practices, draw inspiration from cultural memory, and transform it into creative works that interact with society and public space. She emphasized that this participation extends the Association’s mission to preserve Kuwaiti heritage, safeguard traditional crafts, and pass them on to future generations, while also providing new platforms for artisans to showcase their talents and strengthen their presence in the cultural and artistic landscape.
Sheikh Bibi commended the opportunity to display the work at Martyr’s Park, which helps introduce the public to the aesthetics of handicrafts and highlights them as a living and evolving component of Kuwaiti national identity.
The work embodies a collective artistic experience that blends craft heritage with contemporary creativity. It features crochet-knitted circles varying in colors and shapes, forming a suspended artistic composition whose details interact with light, shadow, and space, reflecting the spirit of cooperation and creativity among Kuwaiti artisans.
The installation draws its elements from Kuwait’s maritime heritage, specifically the “dayyan,” a traditional netted basket used by pearl divers to collect oysters during pearl-diving voyages. It reinterprets its structure, based on rings, knots, and interlacing, through a modern artistic style that connects popular memory with contemporary creative expression. (End) S.H.D / T.A.B
