Cairo, October 18 (KUNA) – The Arab League commemorated today, Sunday, the anniversary of the victims of the genocide committed by the Israeli occupation authorities against the Palestinian people, featuring live testimonies from Gaza Strip residents and hosting a documentary exhibition documenting the war’s impact, destruction, and human losses.

The event opened with a speech by Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy, delivered on his behalf by Assistant Secretary-General for the Palestine and Occupied Arab Territories Affairs, Ambassador Faed Mustafa. This was followed by a speech by Arab Parliament Speaker Mohammed Al-Yamahi, who emphasized the importance of honoring the victims and documenting the crimes and violations suffered by the Palestinian people during the war.

The event featured four live testimonies from Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, highlighting the humanitarian suffering endured by residents since the outbreak of the war and the human losses, injuries, and humanitarian tragedies caused by the Israeli occupation’s military operations. The testimonies included an account by an Al Arabiya News Channel reporter on the conditions he witnessed in the Strip, a testimony from a mother of several children who was shot and still has a bullet lodged in her body, and a statement from a doctor who was trapped for two months inside Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, detailing the challenges faced by medical staff during the siege. Additionally, a relative of martyrs who lost approximately 32 family members in the war shared his testimony.

Following the live testimonies, a documentary exhibition was held, featuring photos, evidence, and accounts from inside the Gaza Strip, documenting the impact of the occupation’s military operations, the scale of destruction in the Strip, and aspects of civilian suffering, as well as human and material losses.

According to figures provided by the Palestinian Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip, the number of Palestinian martyrs since the war began on October 7, 2023, exceeds 74,000, while the number of injured stands at 175,000, amid ongoing humanitarian and health repercussions of the war and the destruction affecting homes, facilities, and infrastructure.

The event aims to document the national and human memory related to the victims, the crime, and its perpetrators, and to renew calls for international protection for the Palestinian people and accountability for those responsible for violations, ultimately enabling them to exercise their right to self-determination and establish their independent state in accordance with international law.

This commemoration marks the first time the occasion is being observed, in implementation of the decision by the Arab League Council of Ministers at its 166th ordinary session in September 2026, which designated October 17 of each year as a day to remember the victims of the genocide committed by the Israeli occupation authorities against the Palestinian people.

On October 17, 2023, more than 700 Palestinians were martyred in less than 24 hours, including victims of the Al-Ahli Arab Hospital (Baptist) massacre in Gaza City, as well as victims of other massacres committed by the occupation authorities in the Strip.

Kuwait was represented at the event by its Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Ambassador Talal Al-Mutairi. (End) M.M. / S.M.A.
