Beirut, October 17 (KUNA) -- The French political-military delegation, led by France’s Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot, discussed bilateral relations with Lebanon in the defense sector and the future of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) following the end of its mandate at the end of this year.
The Lebanese Ministry of Defense said in a press statement that Defense Minister Major General Michel Mousa expressed his appreciation for the continuous support provided by France to Lebanon, its army, and its institutions. He emphasized that the priority at the current stage is to halt Israeli occupation forces’ attacks, achieve their withdrawal from the south, and avoid any security vacuum that might arise from the conclusion of the international forces’ mission.
Mousa affirmed that extending UNIFIL’s mandate represents the “most suitable option” until an alternative appropriate formula is reached under UN auspices and in close coordination with the Lebanese Army.
The statement quoted France’s Secretary of State for Veterans and Armed Forces, Alice Rivaz, as reiterating France’s commitment to continuing its efforts, in cooperation with its European and international partners, to prepare for the post-UNIFIL phase and to stand ready to contribute to future arrangements aimed at supporting Lebanon’s sovereignty, maintaining stability in the south, and continuing support for the Lebanese Army.
In a related development, the Lebanese Army Command said in a similar statement that Army Chief General Rodolphe Heikel met with Minister Rivaz and French Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot, in the presence of the French Ambassador to Lebanon, Patrick Dorlhiac. The meeting discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the Lebanese and French armies and possible alternatives for the post-UNIFIL phase.
The French delegation expressed its country’s appreciation for the Lebanese Army’s efforts and its role in maintaining security and stability, emphasizing that the international presence in the south contributes to maintaining stability, particularly in light of ongoing attacks and violations by Israeli occupation forces.
