London, October 17 (KUNA) -- French President Emmanuel Macron affirmed on Saturday that the law will hold accountable and punish anyone involved in burning government buildings and looting public and private property, in response to a wave of violent protests that swept several French cities in protest against the high cost of living. Macron stated in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account that “there is no place for violence in the French Republic,” adding that “the French stand united against those sowing chaos and seeking to undermine official institutions, preventing citizens from expressing their demands through peaceful means.” Macron expressed his support, as well as that of the “nation,” for security forces and law enforcement agencies, which he described as defenders of the right to protest. The president’s remarks came hours after French security forces arrested hundreds of protesters who had stormed government buildings and set fire to several facilities in multiple cities, including the capital, Paris. France has been experiencing renewed protests for weeks, driven by rising living costs and other local issues, with the government and President Emmanuel Macron blamed for the deterioration of conditions in the country.
