Cairo, Oct 17 (KUNA) -- Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, stressed the need to de-escalate tensions and swiftly restore calm and stability in the region during a meeting held on Saturday with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the two sides discussed ways to reach an agreement that would help contain the current crisis and prevent the conflict from widening. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 52nd session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Foreign Ministers’ Council in Baghdad, Iraq.
The statement added that Abdelatty emphasized the necessity of ensuring freedom of international navigation and the regular flow of trade through maritime routes, which would help mitigate the negative repercussions of the crisis on the global economy, particularly given the significant disruptions it has caused to energy and fertilizer supply chains and international trade. Abdelatty also underscored, according to the statement, the importance of respecting the security and stability of the Gulf Arab states and all countries in the region, as well as the need to halt all hostile acts targeting Saudi Arabia and to condemn such unjustified attacks.
