Beirut, October 16 (KUNA) -- Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix stressed on Friday the importance of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701 and the international organization’s commitment to supporting peace and stability in Lebanon. In a statement issued by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) at the conclusion of his visit, Lacroix said that Lebanese authorities “clearly expressed the necessity of a third party represented by the United Nations to prevent escalation between the Israeli occupation forces and the Lebanese Armed Forces,” highlighting concerns regarding the future of the Blue Line and support for local communities in the south after UNIFIL’s departure. The statement added that Lacroix met with the mission’s leadership and personnel in the Naqoura area, as well as representatives of troop-contributing countries and the diplomatic corps, expressing his appreciation for their efforts under “extremely difficult” operational conditions. The UN official noted that UNIFIL will continue its operations until the end of its mandate on December 31, 2026, with tasks including monitoring violations and facilitating humanitarian activities, while the Security Council considers post-mission options.
