Brussels, October 16 (KUNA) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on the European Union today, Friday, to provide an additional 70 billion euros next year to help his country continue to counter Russian military operations, stressing that these funds are essential to meet defense and armament needs and to bolster Ukraine’s resilience.

Speaking to EU leaders at their summit in Brussels, Zelenskyy said the war will cost Ukraine 155 billion euros next year, adding that Kyiv needs at least 70 billion euros in additional support from the EU. He said, “This is a realistic amount, and I ask you to provide this support, which will help us keep Russia under control.”

Following his meetings with European leaders, Zelenskyy affirmed that he is advocating exclusively for the interests of Ukraine and its people, amid renewed tensions with US President Donald Trump, in response to a question about his stance on American criticism. He expressed his belief that most Americans support his country in the face of the Russian offensive, saying, “In the end, the American people will have their say.”

Kyiv’s request comes as the EU continues to disburse installments of a 90 billion-euro loan intended to help Ukraine cover its financing needs through the end of 2027. However, Ukrainian authorities have warned of a persistent large budget gap amid damage to the country’s economy caused by the war with Russia. (End) A.R.N. / R.J.
