Geneva, October 16 (KUNA) -- Nayla Hajar, Special Assistant to the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan, announced on Friday that a consultative meeting will be held in Geneva on October 21 to enhance coordination among initiatives and peace efforts in Sudan.

During a press briefing in Geneva, Hajar said the meeting, hosted by the United Nations in partnership with Switzerland, aims to bring together 27 parties, including states and multilateral organizations, that are pursuing initiatives on Sudan, in order to coordinate existing efforts and strengthen their integration amid the multiplicity of international and regional initiatives aimed at ending the Sudanese crisis.

She explained that the meeting will discuss three main axes: efforts to de-escalate the situation in Sudan, the political process, and the regional dimensions of the crisis, given the spillover of its repercussions into neighboring countries.

She noted that the participants would include high-level delegations of ministers, foreign ministers, and senior officials from the Quartet—namely the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia—as well as other countries concerned with the Sudan file, including Qatar, Turkey, Norway, and Germany, along with the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Participation will also include regional and international entities, such as the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the European Union, the Arab League, and the United Nations.

Hajar pointed out that the Sudanese government and Sudanese parties involved in the conflict would not participate in the meeting sessions. She clarified that this is the sixth meeting of the mechanism established primarily to coordinate the efforts of mediators and parties leading peace initiatives, in implementation of the coordinating role assigned to the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan. She added that the Envoy’s Office is working in close coordination with the Sudanese government and various concerned parties in the country to keep them informed of the meeting’s outcomes.
