Brussels, Oct 14 (KUNA) -- Far-right French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen condemned on Wednesday attempts to accelerate the conclusion of an agreement on the European Union’s long-term budget for the 2028–2034 period ahead of the upcoming elections in France and other European countries in 2027. Speaking at a press conference in Brussels on the eve of the European leaders’ summit, Le Pen said that the “accelerated timeline” aimed at reaching a budget agreement by the end of this year represents “an attempt to preempt and suffocate future democratic choices.” She added, “We are being asked to accept the finalization of this agreement more than a year before the elections. There is nothing serious about this.”
Le Pen’s remarks come as the European Commission strives to reach a final budget agreement before the Christmas holiday, amid growing concerns that the outcome of next year’s French presidential election could affect the course of European negotiations, particularly if Le Pen, known for her opposition to the European Commission’s policies, were to win.
European leaders will hold a summit in Brussels on Thursday to discuss several files, including the Irish presidency’s proposal for the EU’s long-term budget for 2028–2034, as part of efforts to bring member states closer together on spending priorities and the overall level of funding.
