New York, October 14 (KUNA) -- Kuwait reaffirmed today the importance of the role played by United Nations political missions as a key instrument of preventive diplomacy, conflict prevention and peaceful settlement, and in supporting and sustaining peacebuilding efforts. This was stated in Kuwait’s address, delivered by Diplomatic Attaché Abdulaziz Al-Humaidan to the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary) of the UN General Assembly, during the discussion of the agenda item on political missions.
Al-Humaidan stressed the need to enable these missions to carry out their mandates efficiently and effectively by providing the necessary financial and human resources commensurate with the nature of their tasks and the challenges they face, while adhering to the principles of transparency, accountability, and sound resource management. He emphasized the importance of striking a balance between the tasks and responsibilities assigned to political missions and the resources allocated to them, ensuring their sustainability and capacity to respond to evolving challenges.
In this context, he called for enhanced coordination among various UN organs, exchange of expertise, and institutional capacity-building to improve performance, optimize resource utilization, and achieve the objectives for which these missions were established.
Al-Humaidan outlined Kuwait’s practical and financial contributions in supporting UN efforts to safeguard international peace and security, including hosting the United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM) for 12 years until its mandate ended in 2003, and bearing two-thirds of its costs.
He also referred to the adoption by the UN Security Council of Resolution 2792 (2025), which ensured the continuation of UN follow-up on the files of Kuwaiti and third-country nationals who are prisoners and missing persons, as well as Kuwaiti property, including the National Archives.
He expressed Kuwait’s hope to continue close cooperation with the UN Secretary-General’s High Representative, Ms. Mari Yamashita, responsible for implementing the resolution, affirming Kuwait’s full support for her efforts to achieve tangible progress in resolving these files. He also expressed Kuwait’s appreciation for the efforts made by member states of the Security Council in this regard, given the specific humanitarian and national dimensions of these files, which require continued international follow-up and attention.
In conclusion, Al-Humaidan reiterated Kuwait’s steadfast commitment to supporting UN efforts to safeguard international peace and security, emphasizing the importance of continuing to provide the necessary support to political missions to enable them to carry out their mandates and contribute to realizing the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
