Washington, Oct 14 (KUNA) -- U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that Taiwan has agreed to purchase 30 percent of the output of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) project that the United States plans to develop in Alaska in cooperation with South Korea over the next 20 years.

Trump stated in a post on his Truth Social platform that “Taiwan has agreed to invest $4.4 billion as its share in the capital of the Alaska LNG project, valued at $50 billion, which is part of the trade and investment agreement concluded between the United States and South Korea.”

He added that U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick secured a commitment from Taiwan to purchase LNG volumes under a purchase agreement valued between $70 billion and $80 billion, representing 30 percent of the pipeline’s capacity over the next 20 years.

Trump described the deal as “the largest of its kind in history,” noting that the project will come under the U.S. federal government once all necessary permits and licenses are completed to pave the way for its implementation.

It is recalled that Taiwan announced last year a government plan to increase its share of U.S. gas in total LNG imports to three times its current level, reaching 30 percent over the next decade. (End) A.M.M. / H.S.S.
