Riyadh, 14 October (KUNA) -- The Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jassem Al-Budaiwi, held talks today with Jorge Da Silva, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), to explore ways to enhance joint cooperation in development and humanitarian fields.

The GCC Secretariat said in a statement that the discussions, held in Bangkok, Thailand, on the sidelines of Al-Budaiwi’s participation in the 2026 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group, focused on reviewing the tragic situation in the Gaza Strip and the associated economic, humanitarian, and developmental challenges.

The talks centered on efforts by the task force established by the UN Secretary-General to develop technical mechanisms for addressing humanitarian needs in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as ways to strengthen cooperation to support development and humanitarian projects, promote sustainable development, and consolidate regional and international security and stability.

According to the statement, Al-Budaiwi emphasized the importance of mobilizing international efforts to assist the Palestinian people on all fronts, and the necessity of ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz without restrictions or fees, alongside coordinated international efforts to safeguard the security of waterways and the safety of maritime navigation.
