Ramallah, October 14 (KUNA) -- The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates today strongly condemned Colombia’s decision to open its embassy to the Israeli occupation in the occupied city of Jerusalem. In a press statement, the ministry described the move as a blatant violation of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions, and as an assault on the Palestinian people and their just and legitimate national rights. It affirmed that all measures and decisions aimed at altering the legal and historical status of the occupied city of Jerusalem are null and void and carry no legal effect. The ministry stressed that opening an embassy to the Israeli occupation in occupied Jerusalem constitutes a violation of resolutions of international legitimacy, undermines the international consensus on the legal status of the holy city, and infringes upon the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, while also encouraging the occupation authorities to continue their colonial policies and their attempts to impose illegal facts on the ground. The ministry called on the Colombian government to comply with international law, respect relevant UN resolutions, and reverse this step in order to preserve the prospects for achieving a just and comprehensive peace based on ending the long-standing Israeli occupation and realizing the independence of the State of Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital. It emphasized the importance of fraternal and friendly countries, as well as regional and international organizations, fulfilling their responsibilities in this regard and working to protect the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people in accordance with resolutions of international legitimacy and provisions of international law, particularly those concerning the legal status of the city of Jerusalem, and to implement UN resolutions and Arab and Islamic consensus decisions calling for the adoption of necessary political, diplomatic, economic, and legal measures against any country that opens or relocates its embassy to Jerusalem.
