Brussels, Oct 12 (KUNA) -- The European Commission warned on Monday that the proposed deep cuts to the EU’s upcoming long-term budget could undermine the bloc’s key priorities, following a proposal to reduce spending by 141 billion euros (approximately 157.6 billion dollars) for the 2028–2034 period. Commission spokesperson Palasz Ogvari said in a press statement that the Commission “regrets the significant drop in the overall size of the budget,” adding that “the large cuts threaten to undermine the key priorities we have collectively agreed upon.” He clarified that the EU is also concerned about reductions in funding allocated to the tools needed to respond to crises. Ogvari noted that “we have more and more tasks at the European level, as we face a growing number of crises and unforeseen circumstances that we must address collectively.” The Irish rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union published on Saturday the latest budget proposals for 2028–2034, amid divisions among member states over the budget’s size, as parties seek to reach an agreement by Christmas. Notably, despite the proposed cuts, the new multiannual financial framework, totaling around 1.2 trillion euros, will remain significantly larger than the EU’s previous budget. (End) A.R.N. / A.B.G.
