Cairo, October 12 (KUNA) -- The coordinating meeting to discuss the establishment of the “Arab Electronic Intellectual Property Register” platform kicked off today, Monday, at the headquarters of the Arab League Secretariat in Cairo. The meeting is attended by a delegation from the Patents Administration of Kuwait’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry, as part of efforts to enhance regional cooperation and develop digital mechanisms for exchanging information, data, and expertise.
Dr. Maha Bakheet, Director of the Intellectual Property and Competitiveness Administration at the Arab League and a Minister Plenipotentiary, stated that nine Arab countries, including Kuwait, have joined the platform project, reflecting member states’ commitment to strengthening cooperation and exchanging expertise in this field.
She explained that the meeting builds on the Arab League’s ongoing collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to launch the “Arab Electronic Intellectual Property Register” platform, culminating in the signing of a cooperation agreement between the two parties in November 2025, based on a memorandum of understanding signed in 2000 to enhance coordination, exchange expertise, and support the development of intellectual property systems in Arab countries.
She noted that the 16th meeting of the Standing Technical Committee on Intellectual Property, held last February, welcomed the cooperation agreement between the Arab League and WIPO for launching the platform and recommended continuing coordination to complete the project and hold a workshop to discuss implementation mechanisms.
Bakheet emphasized that this recommendation underscores the importance of continuing joint efforts and completing the necessary technical and organizational requirements to launch the platform and achieve its objectives. She praised WIPO’s cooperation and support for the efforts of the Arab League and member states, expressing hope that the meeting’s outcomes would enhance Arab cooperation and support digital transformation in the field of intellectual property.
The meeting is held in collaboration between the Arab League and WIPO, with support from the Japan Patent Office, to discuss the creation of an Arab electronic intellectual property register that enhances digital transformation, data quality, and integration among national systems.
The meeting is scheduled to discuss the technical aspects of the register, artificial intelligence applications, and the experiences of member states, and is expected to conclude next Thursday with a discussion of a roadmap for implementing the project and defining the responsibilities of relevant entities.
