Brussels, October 11 (KUNA) -- The European Union today reaffirmed its full support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people in their confrontation with Russia, emphasizing the need to protect global food supplies and energy infrastructure. This comes as international efforts to end the war continue, amid criticism directed at Zelenskyy by U.S. President Donald Trump.
In a statement following a phone call with Zelenskyy, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said she supported his call for a ceasefire that would safeguard global food supplies and energy infrastructure in both Ukraine and Russia. She added that “the war has entered a more dangerous and dark phase,” noting that Russia is targeting civilians in areas far from the front lines amid its setbacks on the battlefield.
Von der Leyen reaffirmed the EU’s solidarity with the Ukrainian people and expressed her full support for Zelenskyy in leading the struggle for his people’s freedom. She clarified that Ukraine would be at the forefront of discussions at the European Council meeting scheduled for this week, where European leaders will review its financial needs for next year and explore ways to mobilize additional international support.
She further stated that the EU would provide additional funding this week for drones and missiles to enhance Ukraine’s defensive capabilities and protect its airspace. Von der Leyen also noted that the EU intends to open two additional chapters of accession negotiations with Ukraine, reaffirming the continued momentum in Kyiv’s path toward EU membership.
Von der Leyen’s remarks came after U.S. President Donald Trump criticized his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on Saturday, calling for the election of a new president in Ukraine. Trump also condemned Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil infrastructure, following his announcement of an agreement to supply diesel to Russia. (End) A.R.N. / H.S.S.
