Islamabad, Oct 11 (KUNA) -- The Pakistani military announced on Sunday that security forces foiled an infiltration attempt by militants from Afghanistan into Pakistan, resulting in the killing of 12 militants and the martyrdom of a Pakistani soldier.

In a statement, the military’s media wing said that movements of a group of militants attempting to approach the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in the tribal Kurram area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the north were detected. It noted that security forces engaged them effectively.

The statement clarified that while security forces, on high alert and vigilance, thwarted the infiltration attempt, outposts affiliated with the Afghan Taliban fired in support of the militants’ effort. It added that the skilled and precise response by the troops led to the killing of 12 Afghan Taliban militants.

It further stated that during intense exchanges of fire, a Pakistani army soldier made the ultimate sacrifice and attained martyrdom after fighting bravely.

The military said, “This incident reaffirms the validity of Pakistan’s objective and realistic stance regarding the facilitation and sponsorship by the Taliban of cross-border terrorism, and its deliberate and egregious failure to prevent the use of Afghan territory by terrorist organizations. The Taliban regime has consistently failed to fulfill its international commitments regarding counter-terrorism.”

For his part, Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, in a separate statement, praised the security forces for their success in thwarting the terrorists’ infiltration attempt across the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

Sharif expressed deep sorrow and grief over the martyrdom of a soldier during the operation, commending the martyr’s selfless spirit in defending the homeland. He emphasized that there would be no compromise whatsoever regarding Pakistan’s security and sovereignty, adding that the entire nation stands united alongside the brave members of its security forces in the war against terrorism.

This confrontation comes as Pakistan witnesses an escalation in terrorist attacks, particularly in the provinces of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which border Afghanistan. (End) S.B.K / F.D.S
