Cairo, Oct 11 (KUNA) -- The Central Bank of Egypt announced on Sunday that the country’s annual core inflation rate fell to 14.1 percent in September, down from 14.9 percent in August, driven by declines in some basic commodities and tight monetary conditions.

In a statement, the central bank said that the core consumer price index rose by 0.8 percent month-on-month in September, compared with a 1.5 percent increase in the same month of 2025 and a 0.3 percent rise in August.

It added that the general consumer price index increased by 1.3 percent month-on-month in September, compared with a 1.8 percent rise in the same month last year and a 0.1 percent increase in August 2026, propelled by higher prices for vegetables, food, and beverages.

The bank clarified that the annual general inflation rate in urban areas declined to 13.9 percent in September, down from 14.5 percent in the preceding month.

It attributed the disinflation to a slowdown in the pace of food price increases, supported by the central bank’s restrictive monetary policy, which has maintained high interest rates to absorb liquidity despite temporary spikes in the prices of some food products.

In earlier data, the central bank projected that inflation would continue its downward trajectory into single digits during the second half of 2027, with an expected convergence toward the target range of 7 percent. (End) MM / NS A
