Moscow, Oct 10 (KUNA) -- Russian Presidential Assistant Yuri Ushakov said that the phone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump was “rich in content and friendly,” lasting about 90 minutes and covering developments in Ukraine and Iran, as well as broad economic initiatives including supplies of Russian oil products.

In remarks reported by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti on Saturday, Ushakov said the two leaders discussed prospects for a settlement in Ukraine, noting that Putin reaffirmed Moscow’s adherence to its position regarding the objectives of what it calls the “special military operation,” and stressed that the desired settlement should ensure a long-term and sustainable peace.

He clarified that Putin briefed Trump on Russian measures in response to attacks that Moscow accuses Ukrainian forces of carrying out. Ushakov said Russia would study the timing for resuming negotiations on a Ukrainian settlement, accusing Kyiv of undermining the possibility of an immediate resumption.

On the Iranian issue, the Russian official stated that Putin emphasized during the call that diplomatic options “have not been exhausted,” and stressed the need to reach an agreement with Tehran. He added that Russia’s proposal to remove enriched Iranian uranium remains on the table. Ushakov noted that “the United States continues indirect dialogue with Iran despite the sharpness of mutual statements,” pointing out that Putin informed Trump that he had discussed in detail the latest developments on Iran with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during their meeting in Turkmenistan.

On economic relations, Ushakov said the two leaders discussed preparations for broad economic initiatives, including supplies of Russian oil products to American and global markets, noting that the U.S. side would provide further clarifications regarding supplies of Russian diesel fuel.

Regarding the continuation of bilateral communications, Ushakov reported that Trump expressed his readiness to maintain contact with Putin, and that both sides expressed satisfaction with the functioning of communication channels between the two administrations, their security agencies, and various institutions. He added that the question of holding a bilateral meeting between the two presidents was not discussed in specific terms, but he pointed to the possibility of their meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum if both participate.

The Russian official affirmed that the conversation reflected the ongoing communication between Moscow and Washington on bilateral and international issues, while the date for resuming negotiations on Ukraine remains unspecified.

The Kremlin had announced that the phone call between Putin and Trump took place on Friday, as part of continued communication between Moscow and Washington on several international files, foremost among them the Ukrainian crisis, bilateral relations, and developments surrounding Iran.

The call comes amid ongoing U.S. efforts to reach a settlement to the war in Ukraine, which began with Russia’s military operation in February 2022, amid disagreements over the terms of a settlement and mechanisms for resuming negotiations. (End) Dan / M.M.J
