EU expresses regret over US sanctions on the International Criminal Court
Brussels, Oct 9 (KUNA) -- The European Express on Friday its deep regret over the United States’ announcement of its intention to impose sanctions on the International Criminal Court (ICC), affirming its readiness to take all necessary measures to enable the court to continue carrying out its mandate. The European Commission said in a statement that the EU would work closely with the ICC to ensure it continues to operate effectively. It added that the EU remains committed to working with the 125 states parties to the Rome Statute to preserve and respect the court’s independence, thereby ensuring its continued performance of its vital mission. The EU expressed hope that the six-month grace period before the U.S. measures take effect would create space for dialogue. It reaffirmed its readiness to take any necessary measures to enable the court to continue its work investigating war crimes and crimes against humanity, prosecuting their perpetrators, and protecting the interests of EU entities operating within the single market. Earlier on Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that the United States intends to impose broad sanctions on the ICC, including a ban on financial transactions with the court and cutting off its resources, thereby paralyzing its operations. He noted, however, that these measures are designed to be reversible in the event a diplomatic solution is reached that addresses Washington’s concerns. (End) A.R.N. / R.J.
