Mauritanian Prime Minister Submits Government Resignation to President
Algiers, Sept 9 (KUNA) – Mauritanian Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Djeiy presented the resignation of his government to President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani on Friday, who received him at the presidential palace. The Mauritanian presidency said in a statement that “the government’s resignation comes after President Ghazouani received on Thursday the report of the investigation committee into the fires at the Mauritanian Electricity Company (SOMLEC).” The government’s resignation comes two years and one month after its appointment in early August 2024, at the start of Ghazouani’s second term, during which it underwent two cabinet reshuffles. Ould Djeiy is the third prime minister appointed by Ghazouani during his two terms, following Ismail Ould Beidh Ould Sid’Ahmed and Mohamed Ould Belal. Two substations belonging to SOMLEC were hit by fires on August 21 and 22 last year, causing widespread power outages in the capital, Nouakchott, and its suburbs, lasting about five days in some areas. The official report blamed the incident on the Minister of Oil and Energy and several senior officials in the ministry. (End) M.R./R.J.
