Brussels, Oct 9 (KUNA) -- European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Friday congratulated lawyer and human rights activist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay on her winning the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, praising her contributions to defending justice, peace, and human dignity. In a post on the X platform, von der Leyen said that few people have dedicated their lives to justice, peace, and human dignity as Pillay has, having confronted some of the darkest chapters in human history, from the violence of South Africa’s apartheid regime to the atrocities of the genocide in Rwanda. She added that Pillay has directly confronted the brutality of injustice and never turned a blind eye, defending the oppressed, the vulnerable and marginalized, and those without a voice. Von der Leyen affirmed that Pillay upholds the rule of law in the face of the logic of power, considering her courage and moral clarity to be a valuable compass in a world where the need for justice is greater than ever. Earlier on Friday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that South African judge Navanethem “Navi” Pillay had been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her contributions to promoting peace and international law.
