Kremlin: Russia Agrees with US Secretary of State's Assessment That There Are No Prospects for a Diplomatic Settlement in Ukraine
Moscow, 8 Oct (KUNA) -- The Russian presidency (the Kremlin) announced on Thursday that Russia agrees with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s assessment that there are currently no prospects for a diplomatic settlement to the conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing that any resolution must be comprehensive, guaranteed, and resilient “for generations.” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in media remarks that Moscow concurred with Rubio’s evaluation of the current situation, referring to the U.S. secretary’s description of a “strategic stalemate” in the conflict and the absence of near-term prospects for a negotiated settlement. Peskov clarified that Russia views a comprehensive settlement as the way to address the conflict, noting that partial measures or agreements would not be sufficient to achieve an integrated solution and that freezing the conflict would not contribute to its resolution. He stressed that the desired settlement must be a forward-looking solution, “guaranteed and safeguarded against setbacks,” ensuring long-term stability that extends to future generations. Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in media comments that the war in Ukraine is going through a phase of “strategic stalemate,” explaining that breaking this stalemate could occur through a negotiated settlement or through escalation by one or both sides that could widen the conflict. Rubio affirmed that the United States remains ready to help create conditions for a negotiated settlement, but acknowledged that achieving such a settlement remains distant at present. The Kremlin’s remarks come as diplomatic efforts to end the conflict continue to face fundamental differences between Moscow and Kyiv, amid U.S. warnings that the ongoing stalemate could lead to a broader and more dangerous escalation.
