Beirut, Oct 7 (KUNA) -- The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced on Wednesday that one of its sites near the town of Kafr Kila in southern Lebanon, along the “Blue Line,” came under fire from small arms, with no injuries reported. In a statement, UNIFIL said that peacekeepers stationed at one of its sites near Kafr Kila in the eastern sector immediately took cover when the shooting began, noting that the base’s outer wall, residential units, and UN vehicles sustained damage from bullets, resulting in material losses. It stressed that continued firing toward a site marked with United Nations insignia is “unacceptable and constitutes a deliberate targeting that endangers the lives of peacekeepers,” adding that an official investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances of the incident. UNIFIL reiterated its reminder to all parties to comply with international law to ensure the safety and security of United Nations personnel and property, warning that any attack on peacekeepers “constitutes a serious violation” of international humanitarian law and of Security Council Resolution 1701, and “may amount to a war crime.” (End) f z / h s s
