Brussels, Oct 7 (KUNA) -- The European Commission announced on Wednesday the disbursement of 1.24 billion euros ($1.39 billion) to Ukraine as part of the defense component of the €90 billion ($100+ billion) Ukraine Support Loan, to finance the purchase of drones, drone interceptors and their ammunition, as well as missiles manufactured by Ukrainian entities.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement that “Russia continues its deliberate strategy of instilling terror in an attempt to make daily life for Ukrainians unbearable,” adding that the new funding would help strengthen Ukraine’s defense industry and its ability to defend itself, protect its population and infrastructure. She added that the European Union is working to enhance its support for Ukraine in the face of the Russian war, calling on other parties to increase their support as well.
The Commission clarified that €2.28 billion ($3.66 billion) of the Ukraine Support Loan has been allocated for 2026 to bolster Ukraine’s defense industrial capabilities. It confirmed that additional disbursements under the defense component of the loan will continue in the coming weeks in line with Ukraine’s evolving needs, agreed conditions, and monitoring mechanisms.
Highlighting that supporting Ukraine’s defense capabilities is a key priority for the EU, the Commission explained that providing drones, interceptors, ammunition, air defense systems, and missiles helps Ukraine meet its urgent battlefield needs and enhance its defensive capacities.
It noted that Ukraine still has access to €3.5 billion ($3.635 billion) in financial support for the remainder of 2026, of which €2.8 billion under the Ukraine Support Loan includes €1.5 billion to strengthen its defense industrial capabilities and €1.27 billion for budgetary financial support.
Furthermore, an additional €4.4 billion (approximately $4.92 billion) in budgetary financial support remains available this year under the first Ukraine Facility, bringing the total budgetary financial support available for 2026 to more than €1.7 billion ($1.9 billion). (End) A.R.N. / N.S.A.
