Moscow, Oct 6 (KUNA) -- Russian Presidential Assistant Yuri Ushakov announced on Tuesday that the idea of holding a trilateral summit bringing together Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum is “currently on the table,” although practical preparations for such a meeting have not yet begun.
Ushakov, in remarks relayed by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, said the possibility of a trilateral meeting is linked to confirming President Trump’s participation in the summit, adding that there is already an official agreement regarding an anticipated meeting between Presidents Putin and Xi on the sidelines of the summit.
In the context of anticipated meetings, Ushakov announced that President Putin would discuss developments in the Middle East with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian during a bilateral meeting in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, on October 9. He clarified that Pezeshkian would be participating for the first time in the summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), scheduled to be held in Turkmenistan, and noted that the meeting between the Russian and Iranian presidents would focus on a number of issues, foremost among them the situation in the Middle East.
He added that during his visit to Turkmenistan on October 8 and 9, Putin would attend the meeting of CIS leaders, as well as the environmental Caspian Sea summit scheduled for October 9, which will be attended by the five littoral states. He pointed out that the CIS summit would discuss prospects for cooperation among member states, and that leaders would adopt a statement marking the 35th anniversary of the organization’s founding. He noted that Putin might, at their request, brief CIS leaders on the current situation in the Ukraine conflict.
On economic matters, Ushakov said that more than 90 percent of trade settlements and transactions between CIS countries are conducted in national currencies. He explained that the volume of trade between Russia and CIS countries reached $110 billion in 2025, recording a 12 percent growth since the beginning of the current year. He affirmed that strengthening relations within the CIS space remains a priority in Russian foreign policy.
Uzbekistan is scheduled to assume the CIS chairmanship starting January 1, 2027. (End) D.A.N./A.S.
