European Commission Proposes New Guarantees Regarding EU Expansion

European Commission Proposes New Guarantees for EU Enlargement

Brussels, Oct 6 (KUNA) -- The European Commission today proposed new measures and safeguards to facilitate the EU’s enlargement process and ensure its ability to continue functioning effectively as new members join, including imposing restrictions on newly acceding countries’ access to certain agricultural support.
European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations, Marta Kos, said at a press conference that enlargement entails certain risks, noting that the Commission “has identified areas that will require adjustments.” She added that the Commission proposes putting in place “special arrangements” to limit financial support provided to Ukraine under the Common Agricultural Policy in the event of its accession to the EU, alongside restrictions on exports of some Ukrainian products, such as wheat.
Kos emphasized that the Commission also seeks to establish “guarantees” for a period of 15 years after new countries join, to prevent them from obstructing the EU’s work or undermining the rule of law, while facilitating the imposition of sanctions if such actions occur. The Commission also announced its intention to require new member states to commit not to block the accession of other countries to the EU.
EU leaders are scheduled to discuss these proposals at a summit next week, as the Commission seeks to reaffirm the EU’s continued openness to enlargement. (End) A.R.N. / A.S.
