Vienna, Oct 6 (KUNA) -- The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) launched today its first annual report on Environment, Climate, and Sustainable Development for 2026, outlining prevailing perspectives on environmental and sustainable development issues to raise awareness, facilitate understanding of diverse viewpoints, and encourage convergence toward practical, effective, comprehensive, and equitable solutions. The report, a copy of which was obtained by the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), emphasized that climate change and other environmental issues are influenced by activities essential to sustaining human life and achieving societal progress, noting that sustainability requires efforts to protect the environment and enhance human development in an integrated and mutually reinforcing manner. It pointed out that, given OPEC’s projections of a global population increase of approximately 1.4 billion to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, and the likelihood that their activities will double the size of the global economy, the environmental impact of human activities is likely to rise. The report further stated that recent assessments indicate tangible progress in reducing global emissions and advancing the global sustainable development agenda, stressing that the global nature of challenges related to environmental protection and sustainable development necessitates addressing them through international cooperation grounded in the realities and needs of the energy sector. It highlighted OPEC’s and its member countries’ efforts in this field, which predate the establishment of multilateral bodies concerned with these issues. For his part, OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais, in a speech introducing the report, said that “the unique circumstances of each country should determine its future path toward achieving energy sector sustainability,” clarifying that each country’s approach must therefore be understood, respected, and supported, provided it contributes to shouldering its fair share in confronting relevant global challenges.
