Brussels, October 5 (KUNA) -- The European Union called on Monday for an immediate de-escalation in Ethiopia across all fronts, warning that the continued escalation of violence and regional tensions, particularly between Ethiopia and Eritrea, could spark a wider regional conflict that threatens peace and stability in the Horn of Africa.

In a statement on behalf of the EU, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said the Union “is deeply concerned about the ongoing escalation of violence in Ethiopia and the rising regional tensions, particularly between Ethiopia and Eritrea.”

The EU urged all concerned parties to refrain from any actions or statements that could heighten tensions, and called on the parties to the permanent ceasefire agreement to renew their commitment to the full implementation of the agreement under the African Union.

The statement emphasized the need to respect international humanitarian law, protect civilians at all times, and ensure unhindered access for humanitarian aid.

The EU reaffirmed the necessity of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states, calling on external actors to refrain from interference and to use their influence to prevent further escalation and to advance political and diplomatic solutions.

The EU reiterated its commitment to supporting regional stability, peaceful cooperation, and economic integration in the Horn of Africa, and confirmed its readiness to support diplomatic efforts aimed at fostering meaningful dialogue and reaching peaceful resolutions to conflicts.
